Car insurance discounts are not always automatic. Some require proof, enrollment, or a specific billing setup. When comparing quotes, ask which discounts are already included and which ones you may still qualify for.
Driver-based discounts
- Safe driver or accident-free discount.
- Good student discount for qualifying students.
- Defensive driving course discount where accepted.
- Low mileage discount if you drive less than average.
- Usage-based or telematics discount based on driving behavior.
Policy-based discounts
- Multi-car discount for insuring more than one vehicle.
- Bundle discount for combining auto with home, renters, condo, or other policies.
- Continuous insurance discount for avoiding lapses.
- Paid-in-full, automatic payment, or paperless billing discounts.
Vehicle-based discounts
Some vehicles qualify for discounts based on safety features or anti-theft equipment. Newer cars may include automatic emergency braking, lane assistance, alarms, tracking systems, or other features that affect pricing differently by company.
Group or affiliation discounts
Some carriers offer discounts for employers, alumni groups, professional associations, military service, or membership organizations. These discounts are easy to miss if you do not ask.
Discounts are not everything
A company with fewer discounts can still be cheaper overall. Focus on the final premium for the same coverage, not just the number of discounts listed on the quote.
Questions to ask
- Are all eligible discounts already applied?
- Which discounts expire or require renewal?
- Does telematics affect my price if my driving score is poor?
- Would bundling help, or is auto-only cheaper?
- Are there fees for monthly payments?
